90 Miles To Freedom

12 financially desperate people must form 4 teams and build rafts from junkyard parts and safely navigate their way from Cuba to Florida. The first team that reaches dry land wins FREEDOM -freedom from bills for one year, gasoline for life, and $1 Million.

These 12 people span a diverse ethnic mix of Americans and must form 4 teams of 3 persons each. All the teams are brought to a junk yard in Cuba (or Miami) to build makeshift lifeboats from junkyard parts, old cars, tires, barrels, and whatever else they can find. The team that successfully navigates itself through the ocean and reaches dry land in Florida wins.

The people selected for this race are chosen based on their financial problems, hardship tales, citizenship knowledge, and mechanical skills. They are:

Modern day financial refugees.
Desperate people.
Workers with crushing bills.
A student drowning in loans.
A friend swallowed in debt.
A neighbor losing his house.
That homeless guy that’s actually really smart.
Good people struggling to get by.

Contestant backstory is chronicled in the first episode, as well as throughout the series as the makeshift boats are built and the race is set to begin.
Building the boats will consist of digging through the junkyard for choice parts, hidden tools, and other bonuses. All teams will be given “Freedom Challenges” with the opportunity to win tool “upgrades”, extra parts, food for the trip, and other necessities to help them build a better boat.
